A watercolour painting by a Crediton artist has been chosen for an important exhibition in London. The work by John Rochester, A Venetian Palace, has been selected from more than 800 entries to show at the annual exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.

The exhibition is to be held at the Mall Galleries in London from next Thursday to April 5.

"It hasn't quite sunk in yet," said John, who runs Spinnakers Gallery in Crediton High Street with his wife Michelle. "I don't think it will, until I go to the exhibition and see it hanging on the wall!"

Venice is proving to be an extremely popular subject for John, who is inspired by the reflections, colours and qualities of the Venetian light and water.

Another of his Venice paintings of the Grand Canal has just been selected by Woodmansterne art cards for publication as part of their 2007 Graffiti range.

The card will be available to purchase from Spinnakers Gallery and other outlets stocking Woodmansterne, such as WH Smith.

Following a successful solo exhibition of Venice paintings at Spinnakers Gallery last spring, John visited Venice again in the autumn and is currently working on more paintings for a follow-up exhibition this coming spring.

Anyone who would like an invitation to the exhibition in Crediton should contact the gallery on 01363 774885 or register on the website www.spinnakersgallery.co.uk

John started 2007 with a solo exhibition at Harbour House in Kingsbridge, at which he achieved great sales of his large full-sheet watercolours.

His work has also recently been selected by Burlington Contemporary Art, Cheltenham's premier gallery space, and he has already been asked for more paintings to replace the ones sold.
