John painting in Venice 2006

John Rochester was born in Hertfordshire in 1963, the son of a prominent local artist, Lionel Rochester. He has no formal art training but learned to paint by watching his father and by studying the techniques of well known painters that he admires. Much of his inspiration comes from his travels, having spent many years sailing the Caribbean and east coast of the USA on his boat. Since returning to England he now keeps his boat in Plymouth, spending most weekends sailing and painting. This love of the water is reflected in many of his paintings as well as the effects of light and shadow. John has won awards for his watercolours. His paintings feature in many private collections in the UK and abroad including the United States and Hong Kong.

He lives in Crediton with his wife and two young daughters, in a house which he has been building single-handedly
